St. John's Lutheran Church is a community of people united in Christ and dedicated to celebrating the love of God and serving the needs of our community. As a member congregation of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod St. John's confesses with the whole Christian church our faith in the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe in God the Father, the true source and creator of all things. We believe in God the Son, Jesus Christ, who became flesh, lived, died and rose from the grave to save humankind from the guilt of our sin. We believe in God the Holy Spirit, who alone creates and sustains faith and lives within every Christian, enabling them to live as God's holy children. As a “Lutheran” church, we stand in the tradition of the 16th century reformer Martin Luther, who called the church back to a true understanding of faith and salvation. His teaching can be summarized under three simple points… (1) Grace alone; Grace is the love of God that is given to us even though we don't deserve it. Even though we sin and rebel against Him, God loves us and offers forgiveness to us as a gift, without our having to earn His good will. (2) Faith alone; Faith means to believe in and trust in the one true God and the salvation He gives in Jesus Christ. God alone can create faith in sinful humans, and through that faith He gives to us eternal life. (3) Scripture alone; The Bible is God's perfect Word to us. It has no errors and does not contradict itself, and is the only source of what we believe and teach. Only Scripture points us back to the source of our Salvation, Jesus Christ. St. John's Lutheran Church was established in 1889 by a few families in the Lafe community. Today, we have a membership of approximately 335 adults and children that come from all over Greene and neighboring counties and from all professions and walks of life. We have an active Youth Group and Sunday School program, along with groups for all ages that meet frequently for fellowship and service. In recent years the congregation has taken an active part in assisting the Marmaduke school, Greene County Relay for Life, and a number of community projects. The people of St. John's have a passion to share the love of Christ with all people, here at home and overseas. A large portion of our annual budget is given to our national church body to support mission work. This year, we even have a volunteer who will be serving in the mission field for a year! St. John's has always been a friendly and welcoming place, where all people are warmly invited to celebrate the love God has shown to His people. We hope you will join us! If you have any questions about our church, feel free to contact us at any time at the phone number, or question form on our home page. |
